Alcala de Guadaira is one of the principal towns south of Sevilla. It was founded by the Romans and later it became an important administrative and military centre during the era of al Andalus. It was called Al Kalat Wad Aira, which means “the castle of the Aira river”, and from which the present-day name evolved. Today it has the largest remaining islamic castle in Europe. The town sits on the river Guadaira. Along its banks many water mills were constructed to grind flour, and Alcala rightly became famous for its bakeries and the quality of its bread which was sold in Sevilla. In recent years Alcala gained a very particular architectural wonder when a new bridge was constructed over the river, in the form of a dragon !

The route follows along the canal paths on Canal de los Presos, until arriving at the river Guadaira where it continues along the river banks until arriving at the Alcala de Guadaira. The town centre is pleasant and offers many bars and restaurants. If your legs are strong you go up to the castle which is highly recommended. The town  has extensive country parks which wind alongside the river and they are the perfect place to relax, play and picnic.

19km (12m) outward bound; cycle paths, pathways & greenways.
